Junior Lauren Barton captured another double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Lady Marauders defeated the Durand Railroaders, 40-32.

“It’s not just what she does with the ball,” said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham, “it’s what she does when she doesn’t have the ball. She just makes everyone around her better.”

Durand doubled and tripled team Barton in a smothering 2-3 zone, that limited OE’s shooting to just 27.7% but OE never gave up the lead the entire night. The Marauders were aided by 8 points from Caitlyn Walter (5 rebounds, 3 assists) and 6 points from Josie Nash (4 rebounds) and Erin Witt (7 rebounds, 6 assists). Kylee Sevenksi also chipped in with 5 points for the Marauders while Madison Cunningham pulled down 3 rebounds.

OE got out to a 12-6 first quarter lead and then built that lead to 15 before Durand closed the second quarter with a 5-0 run. That run spilled over to the third quarter where the Railroaders edged OE, 11-6. But the Marauders hit some clutch free throws down the stretch and a couple big baskets to close the game out with an 11-8 fourth quarter advantage.

On the night the Marauders assisted 12 times on 13 made baskets and shot a respectable 10-17 from the foul line. They only committed 9 turnovers while turning Durand over 12 times, 3 of which were steals. Rebounding-wise, Ovid-Elsie overcame a rebound deficit in the first half to hold serve at 35-35.

The win puts OE’s record at 8-6 on the season and 6-4 in the MMAC. With a Byron loss to New Lothrop tonight, that leaves the Marauders in possession of third place.

Ovid-Elsie will host Montrose on Tuesday night which is planned to be a very special tribute to the service men and women in our community. We ask that all veterans or current service men and women (EMS, Fire, Police, etc.) join us for a special night. The JV will play at 5:30 followed by the varsity at approximately 7:00 p.m.
