Ovid-Elsie dropped to 10-9 (8-6 MMAC) with a 50-38 loss to Chesaning Tuesday night.

Lauren Barton scored a team high 12 points and pulled down 5 rebounds while Caitlyn Walter and Kylee Sevenski each scored 8 points. Sevenski was also the leading rebounder with 6. Erin Witt chipped in with 4 points and 6 assists while Kennedy Haynes, Josie Nash, and Madison Cunningham each scored 2.

The Marauders dug themselves in a hole in the first quarter, trailing Chesaning 19-9. A 10-8 second quarter made it a 12 point lead for the Indians at half.

“Our goal was to come out in the third quarter and try to put together a run and cut their lead in half before the end of the quarter,” said Head Coach Ryan Cunningham, “but just the opposite happened.”

Chesaning went on a 5-0 run to open the third quarter and built their lead to 17 before Ovid-Elsie came storming back to cut the lead back down to 5 early in the fourth quarter. Some clutch free throw shooting kept OE at bay and secured the win for Chesaning.

Chesaning out-shot OE from the free throw line 11-18 compared to 4-8 for OE. The Marauders were whistled for 17 fouls while the Indians tallied just 11 fouls. Chesaning also dominated the boards 31-22 with 11 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Marauders assisted 15 times on 15 made baskets and turned Chesaning over 16 times, 11 of which were steals.

This wraps up conference play which saw Byron and New Lothrop tie for the first ladies championship in the newly formed MMAC. Byron and New Lothrop split going 13-1 in the conference while Chesaning takes third at 10-4 and OE fourth at 8-6.

The regular season will conclude on Thursday night with the Marauders hosting Ortonville-Brandon for Seniors’ Night. The JV game is slated for 6:00 p.m. Please note that this game was originally planned for Friday but has been moved to accommodate the boys’ district.

Next week, Ovid-Elsie will travel to Corunna for Districts. OE drew a first round bye and will play Mt Morris on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. The winner will advance to the District Finals on Friday, March 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Corunna. Corunna, Clio and Chesaning are on the other side of the bracket.
