If you’re a fan of girls’ high school basketball, tonight’s match up between Ovid-Elsie and Lake Fenton lived up to the billing. The Lady Blue Devils outlasted the Lady Marauders, 59-55 in a great game that came down to the wire.
Lake Fenton improved to 8-2 while Ovid-Elsie dropped to 6-3.
Lake Fenton took an 11-7 advantage after the first quarter, but Ovid-Elsie came storming back to outscore Lake Fenton 27-12 in the 2nd and took a 34-23 lead into the locker room at half.
“We were happy with the way we were playing, but we also knew it was gonna be a war. It was like two heavy weight fighters throwing hay-makers, and it really came down to who could take the last punch,” Head Coach Ryan Cunningham said. “I’m disappointed that we lost, but I am not disappointed at all in my kids. Those girls went toe to toe with one of the best teams around and showed that they could fight for four quarters.”
Lauren Barton had a team high 20 points to go along with 19 rebounds and 3 steals while Caitlyn Walter finished with 13 points that included 3 three-pointers. Josie Nash had a great all around game scoring 9 points to go along with 5 steals, 3 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Kylee Sevenski (6 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals) and Erin Witt (4 assists, 3 rebounds, 2 steals) had 5 points each and Kennedy Haynes rounded out the scoring with a triple.
Lake Fenton closed the gap with a 17-10 third quarter surge to make it 44-40 OE at the end of the third and then completed their comeback with a 19-11 fourth quarter.
OE forced 24 turnovers including 12 steals and handed out 12 assists on 21 made baskets. They also won the rebound battle 37-34 but shot only 31% compared to Lake Fenton’s 44%. The Marauders also committed 18 turnovers.
Ovid-Elsie will travel to New Lothrop on Friday for an MMAC match up. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
