Ovid-Elsie traveled to St. Charles Monday for a TVC West make up game. St. Charles turned Ovid-Elsie away, 54-45. Ovid-Elsie drops to 10-6 (6-5 TVC West) on the season while St. Charles improves to 6-10 (4-7 TVC West).

“It was just a rough night for us,” Head Coach Ryan Cunningham. “We lost (Lauren) Barton to a knee injury a couple minutes into the game and she didn’t come back. That really threw us out of sync. We haven’t given up more than 43 points all year and to give up 54 tonight shows you how much she means to us defensively and on the boards.
Then, when (Emma) Samson went down with an ankle injury, we were really scrambling.”

Cunningham said the injury will most likely end the sophomore season for Barton.

“She’s played hurt all year, but this is just too much to overcome this time,” Cunningham added. “We’ll talk as a coaching staff and figure out personnel for the rest of the season but there’s no doubt we need someone to step up.”

St. Charles got out to a 14-12 first quarter lead and followed it up with a 12-5 run in the second stanza to take the lead into the locker room, 26-17 at half. The third quarter (12-11) and fourth quarter (17-16) were a draw, but the outcome was still a nine point victory for the Bulldogs.

Hobbling for most of the second half, Samson would have a team high 16 points for Ovid-Elsie including two triples. She also grabbed 4 rebounds and had 3 steals. Kylee Sevenski had another nice showing with 14 points and 2 steals while Kennedy Haynes chipped in with four points and two steals and led the Marauders in rebounding with 7 caroms. Josie Nash also netted 4 points and 2 steals while Erin Witt added 3 points, 6 assists and 4 steals. MacKenzie Cunningham and Lauren Barton rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.

Ovid-Elsie was able to come away with 14 steals after turning St. Charles over 27 times and handed out 12 assists on 16 baskets. However, the Bulldogs outrebounded OE 36-26 and shot 46% from the field and 70% from the line compared to OE’s 31% from the field and 50% from the line.

Ovid-Elsie will host Webberville on Tuesday night and then finish this three-game stretch with Pinconning visiting on Friday night for “youth basketball appreciation night” and “senior night”. Game time on Tuesday has the JV girls playing first at 6:00 p.m. with the Varsity girls following shortly after. The boys’ program travels to Webberville Tuesday night.
