After taking an early lead, the Corunna Cavaliers came storming back to end the first quarter with a 9-5 advantage and never looked back. Corunna outscored the Marauders 13-7 in the second quarter and 14-7 in the third quarter before OE rallied with a 14-13 fourth quarter surge. Corunna won their third straight district title, 49-33.
“I thought our kids played hard tonight and with a lot of heart. They executed our game plan pretty well and kept us in the game,” Head Coach Ryan Cunningham said. “Everyone was expecting this to be a blow out but our kids came to play and they can leave with their heads held high.”
Corunna (20-2, ranked #3 in Class B) will face Freeland on Monday at the Mt. Morris regional.
Erin Witt led the Marauder attack with 10 points and added 3 assists and 3 steals. Caitlyn Walter knocked down three triples en route her 9 points while Lauren Barton added 7 points and 7 rebounds. Kylee Sevenski added 3 points and 3 rebounds while Madison Cunningham and Josie Nash each added 2 points.
Ovid-Elsie assisted 9 times on 12 made baskets and turned Corunna over 11 times, 9 of which were steals. Corunna won the rebound battle 35-19 and gathered 10 caroms on the offensive side. Both teams hit 5 three-pointers on the night, but the free throw discrepancy favored Corunna as the Cavs shot 14 of 21 from the line while OE went 4 of 9. The Marauders did not attempt a single free throw in the first half. Corunna also shot at a higher clip for the game (36.6%) than Ovid-Elsie (27.3%).
The Lady Marauders conclude their season with a record of 12-10. This is the third straight season the Marauders have recorded 12 wins and the second district finals appearance in the last three years.
Congratulations to the seniors on a wonderful career and for leaving positive legacy on the Ovid-Elsie Girls Basketball Program. The season-ending banquet will be held Wednesday, March 13th at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Information Center.
